The fire broke out on an offshore platform that cut about a quarter of Mexico's oil production, killing five workers and injuring six, the CEO said on Monday.

The chief executive of the state-run Petroleos Mexicanos stated; the fire broke out as crews were performing maintenance on the platform.

Pemex Chief Executive Octavio Romero Oropeza added that a search for missing workers continues.

Meanwhile, he noted that the platform remains out of operation, with about 421,000 barrels per day of oil lost and 125 wells offline.

On a separate note, Hurricane Grace pounded Mexico’s Gulf coast with torrential rain on Saturday, producing devastating flooding and mudslides that killed at least eight people, according to authorities.

Grace was whipping up maximum sustained winds of 125 miles per hour (201 km per hour), a Category 3 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale when it slammed into the coast near the resort of Tecolutla in Veracruz state in the early morning.
