Violence near Guadalajara host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Mexican Ministry of Defense announced the death of 60-year-old Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes the Pacific coast of Jalisco.
The Liga MX confirmed via social media that two matches were postponed: a men’s game between Querétaro FC and FC Juárez, and a women’s match between Club América Women and Chivas Women.
Local media, cited by Reuters, reported that two additional second-division matches were also canceled.
One women’s match between Necaxa Women and Querétaro began on Sunday in Aguascalientes but was temporarily halted after players fled the field upon hearing gunfire near Estadio Victoria.
The match eventually resumed, with Necaxa winning 2-1.
Despite the disruptions, other sporting events in Mexico, including the Acapulco Men’s Open, are proceeding as scheduled under strict security protocols. The Mérida Open also kicked off on Monday.
The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada, remains the most significant upcoming sporting event, though the recent unrest has raised concerns about safety and preparations.
