Local and international media outlets have shed light on a major injury scare for Argentine legend Lionel Messi, sending shockwaves of anxiety through the Albiceleste camp ahead of their highly anticipated Round of 16 showdown against Egypt in the 2026 World Cup.
Messi sustained the brutal head injury during Argentina's grueling Round of 32 match against Cape Verde.
The talismanic forward collided heavily with an opponent's leg after falling inside the penalty area, resulting in a prominent and visible hematoma (blood swelling) on the upper part of his face. The medical staff rushed onto the pitch to provide immediate treatment, and the Inter Miami star was later seen using an ice pack to manage the swelling.
Despite the severity of the blow, Messi defiantly refused to leave the pitch, soldiering on until the final whistle.
His resilience paid off, as he guided the defending champions to a thrilling 3-2 victory in extra time. Argentina ultimately sealed their qualification ticket thanks to an own goal in the 111th minute.
Earlier in the match, Messi had opened the scoring for Argentina in the 29th minute, brilliantly controlling a long pass before executing a trademark, sublime chip over the Cape Verde goalkeeper—proving once again his pivotal role in Argentina's title defense campaign.
