The Argentina captain now leads the Golden Boot race with three goals, ahead of several players on two goals, including Kylian Mbappé, who scored twice in France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal, and Erling Haaland, who also netted a brace in Norway’s 4-1 win against Iraq national football team.

Messi had finished as runner-up in the 2022 World Cup Golden Boot race with seven goals, behind Mbappé’s eight, and has now made an early statement in the 2026 tournament.
