Lionel Messi has moved to the top of the 2026 FIFA World Cup scoring table after scoring a hat-trick in Argentina's opener in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The defending champions secured a 3-0 win over Algeria.

The Argentina captain now leads the Golden Boot race with three goals, ahead of several players on two goals, including Kylian Mbappé, who scored twice in France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal, and Erling Haaland, who also netted a brace in Norway’s 4-1 win against Iraq national football team.

Other players such as Kai Havertz, Yasin Ayari, Elijah Just, and Folarin Balogun are in the race as they scored two gaols for each.

Messi had finished as runner-up in the 2022 World Cup Golden Boot race with seven goals, behind Mbappé’s eight, and has now made an early statement in the 2026 tournament.
