Lionel Scaloni has announced the preliminary squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, selecting 55 players as Argentina prepare to defend the title they won in Qatar in 2022.
As expected, Lionel Messi headlines the squad and is set to continue leading the reigning world champions, while Paulo Dybala was notably left out despite his role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph.
The preliminary list features several of Argentina’s key stars, including Emiliano Martínez, Cristian Romero, Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister, Lautaro Martínez and Julián Álvarez.
Scaloni also included a number of rising young talents as part of his plans to refresh the squad ahead of the tournament, most notably Franco Mastantuono and Alejandro Garnacho, both of whom impressed during the current season.
The final squad for the 2026 World Cup is expected to be announced closer to the start of the tournament.
