While winning another traditional Ballon d'Or after 2023 appears challenging for Lionel Messi, a much rarer and more prestigious accolade is reportedly on the horizon.
Recent reports indicate that the Argentine legend is the primary candidate for the "Super Ballon d'Or," an award so exclusive it has only been granted once in football history.
Lionel Messi already holds the record for the most Ballon d'Or titles, with eight trophies spanning from 2009 to 2023.
His closest rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, follows with five. However, the Super Ballon d'Or represents a different level of recognition, designed to honor the greatest player of an entire era.
The only previous recipient was Real Madrid icon Alfredo Di Stéfano, who was presented with the trophy by France Football in 1989 to mark his extraordinary career in the 1950s and 60s.
According to renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano, there is a growing movement within France Football to reintroduce the award in 2029.
Given his unprecedented trophy haul and his recent World Cup victory, Messi is widely considered the favorite to receive the honor.
The news comes as Messi continues his career with Inter Miami in the United States, following a storied journey at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.
Despite his dominance, Messi’s individual accolades have often sparked debate among fans and pundits.
His most recent Ballon d'Or win in 2023 was particularly scrutinized as it coincided with his departure from European club football.
Nevertheless, the potential awarding of the Super Ballon d'Or would serve as a definitive acknowledgment of his impact on the sport, potentially settling the "greatest of all time" conversation as the decade draws to a close.
