Anxiety gripped the Argentine national team ahead of their Round of 16 clash against Egypt in the 2026 World Cup, following an injury sustained by Lionel Messi during his team's last match against Cape Verde.
However, according to the Argentine network TyC Sports, Messi's condition is not cause for alarm. He is expected to be fully ready to lead the Albiceleste against Egypt, with anticipation that he will feature in the starting lineup.
The Argentine network reported that Messi pushed through the entire 120 minutes of the match, which extended into extra time, playing with notable energy and vitality.
During the game, Messi's head collided with an opposing player's leg after falling inside the penalty area. This resulted in a visible hematoma on the upper part of his face, prompting immediate medical intervention on the pitch. The Argentine captain was later seen using an ice pack to reduce the swelling.
Despite the severity of the blow, Messi refused to leave the pitch and continued playing until the final whistle.
He helped guide Argentina to a 3-2 victory in a grueling match that went to extra time, where the defending champions secured their spot in the next round thanks to an own goal in the 111th minute.
