Tunisian President Kais Saied has designated on Monday Elyes Fakhfakh as new Prime Minister (PM), according to a presidency statement.

He will now face the hard task of forming a cabinet, within only a month, capable of winning a confidence vote in the parliament by a simple majority.

 Who is Elyes Fakhfakh?

Fakhfakh, 49, obtained a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from the National School of Engineers of Sfax, and then he obtained a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the INSA School in Lyon, France.

He worked for several years at the Total oil company in Tunisia, and then he joined the "Cortrell" company specialized in auto parts until the end of 2011.

He is known for his opposition to the late President Zine El Abidine ben Ali, and joined the anti-government protests that started in Tunisia in 2011 to demand the overthrow of the ben Ali regime.

He held two positions in different governments after the success of the 2011 revolution in Tunisia.

From 2011 to 2012, he served as Minister of Tourism; from 2012 to 2014, he took over the position of Finance Minister.

In 2019, He ran for the presidency and received 0.34% of the total voting rate.
