France star Kylian Mbappé added another milestone to his remarkable World Cup career after scoring twice in Les Bleus' 3-0 victory over Sweden in the Round of 32, becoming the highest-scoring player in FIFA World Cup knockout-stage history.
Mbappé opened the scoring late in the first half to register his ninth career goal in World Cup knockout matches, surpassing Brazilian legends Leônidas and Ronaldo, who previously shared the record with eight goals each.
The French captain extended his record in the second half by netting his 10th knockout-stage goal, sealing France's comfortable victory and booking their place in the Round of 16.
His first goal also carried historic significance, taking his overall World Cup tally to 17 goals and moving him past Germany's Miroslav Klose into second place on the tournament's all-time scoring list.
Only Argentina captain Lionel Messi has scored more World Cup goals, with 19 after adding to his tally during the 2026 tournament. Mbappé now sits just two goals behind the Argentine legend.
The 27-year-old has continued his outstanding form at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, reaching six goals in the tournament to move level with Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
Mbappé has built an extraordinary knockout-stage record across three World Cups. He scored three elimination-round goals during France's triumphant 2018 campaign before adding five more in Qatar 2022, including a memorable hat-trick in the final against Argentina.
His latest brace against Sweden has now cemented his place as the most prolific player in World Cup knockout history.
