French star Kylian Mbappé has commented on the departure of Spanish coach Xabi Alonso from Real Madrid, becoming the first player from the squad to publicly bid him farewell following the announcement.
Real Madrid confirmed in recent hours that Xabi Alonso’s tenure as head coach had ended by mutual agreement, shortly after the team’s defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup Clásico on Sunday.
Mbappé shared a photo of himself with Alonso on Instagram, expressing his appreciation for the former coach.
He wrote, “It's been short but it was a pleasure to play for you & learn from you. Thank you for giving me the confidence since Day 1. I will remember you as a manager who had clear ideas and knows many things about football.
Under Xabi Alonso’s leadership, Mbappé rose to the top of Real Madrid’s scoring charts this season, netting 29 goals across all competitions.
He also leads the La Liga scoring race with 18 goals in 18 matches.
Real Madrid have since announced the appointment of Álvaro Arbeloa, former Castilla coach, as the new head coach to succeed Alonso.
During Alonso’s spell in charge, Real Madrid played 34 matches in all competitions, suffering six defeats, the last of which came in the 3–2 loss to Barcelona that cost the club the Spanish Super Cup title.
