Kylian Mbappé continued his remarkable run with the French national team, scoring in Les Bleus’ 2-1 victory over Iceland on Tuesday night at the Parc des Princes in Paris during the second round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The star’s penalty just before halftime took his international tally to 52 goals, moving him past Thierry Henry (51) into second place on France’s all-time scoring chart.
Only Olivier Giroud remains ahead of him, with 57 goals, a record that Mbappé now looks increasingly likely to break.
Iceland took a surprise lead in the 21st minute through Andri Gudjohnsen, but Mbappé equalized from the spot in the 45th.
Bradley Barcola then struck the winner for France in the 62nd minute, before Aurélien Tchouaméni’s red card left the hosts battling with 10 men for the final stages.
France, who had opened their qualifying campaign with a win over Ukraine, now sit top of Group D with six points from two matches.
The match was played without Ousmane Dembélé and Désiré Doué, both sidelined through injury.
Reports in France suggest Dembélé could face four to six weeks out with a muscle problem, dealing another blow to PSG and the national side.
With history already in his grasp, Mbappé now stands just five goals away from surpassing Giroud to become France’s greatest-ever goalscorer.
