Real Madrid CF were held to a 1-1 draw by Girona FC on Friday at the Santiago Bernabeu, in a result that dealt a setback to their La Liga title hopes.
The match took a dramatic turn late on when star forward Kylian Mbappe was left bloodied after appearing to take an elbow to the face from Girona defender Vitor Reis inside the penalty area.
Despite protests from Real Madrid players, the referee and VAR opted not to award a penalty, a decision that sparked frustration among the home side.
Earlier in the game, Federico Valverde had given Madrid the lead before Thomas Lemar equalized for Girona in the second half.
Mbappe’s injury capped a difficult night for the Spanish giants, who were unable to find a late winner and dropped two crucial points in the title race.
The result leaves Real Madrid second in the standings, trailing leaders FC Barcelona, who have the opportunity to extend their advantage.
The disappointment comes amid further pressure on Madrid following a recent defeat to FC Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League, with a decisive second leg still to come.
