Egyptian tennis star Mayar Sherif withdrew from this year's Australia Open, the first grand slam championship of the year, due to an injury.
The world 58 seed sustained the injury during the second set of her first-round game against Belgium’s Elise Mertens on Monday.
Sherif had the takeover of the match by 6-2, 2-0 before giving up due to the injury.
The 27-year-old achieved her career-high after reaching number 31 spot in the WTA ranking in June 2023. She became the highest-ranked Egyptian player.
In 2022, Sherif has advanced to the second round of Roland Garros, becoming the first Egyptian woman to win a main draw match at the competition.
In addition, she managed to win the Liqui Moly Open for a second consecutive year.
