Olympique Marseille have announced the mutual termination of Roberto De Zerbi’s contract just days after suffering a crushing 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in Sunday’s Ligue 1 “Classique” at Parc des Princes.
The defeat, which saw Marseille struggle throughout the match, was the final blow to the Italian coach’s tenure.
The decision came after consultations among the club’s top management, including the owner, president, and sporting director.
After careful consideration of the club’s interests and the sporting challenges ahead, the leadership agreed that a change was necessary.
Marseille’s official statement described the separation as amicable, acknowledging De Zerbi’s dedication since taking charge in summer 2024.
The club praised his efforts in guiding Marseille to a second-place finish last season and thanked him for his commitment during a challenging period.
Despite hopes of turning the team’s form around, the heavy defeat to PSG accelerated the decision.
Marseille currently sit fourth in Ligue 1, 12 points behind leaders PSG, and were also eliminated from this season’s UEFA Champions League, compounding the pressure on the squad.
Reports suggest that De Zerbi may return to the English Premier League, where he previously made his mark with Brighton, presenting new opportunities in his coaching career.
The club concluded its statement by wishing the Italian coach success in his future endeavors, while preparing to appoint a new head coach tasked with restoring Marseille to winning ways.
