Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer has confirmed that his retirement from international football remains final, ending any speculation about a possible return for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The German goalkeeper, who stepped away from the national team following Euro 2024, was once again linked with a comeback due to uncertainty over Germany’s goalkeeping situation after Marc-André ter Stegen’s injury.
However, Neuer dismissed any hopes of a return when asked after Bayern Munich’s DFB-Pokal victory over RB Leipzig, giving a brief but clear “yes” when questioned about whether his decision was final.
Neuer’s statement appears to settle ongoing debate in Germany over the goalkeeping position ahead of the World Cup, with Oliver Baumann now widely expected to start under coach Julian Nagelsmann.
Baumann has impressed this season at both club and international level, offering Germany stability as they prepare for the tournament in North America.
