Manchester United claimed an emphatic 2–0 win over rivals Manchester City on Saturday evening at Old Trafford, in a thrilling clash as part of Round 22 of the Premier League.
United started aggressively and nearly took an early lead in the fourth minute when Harry Maguire rose highest to meet a cross, only to see his powerful header crash against the crossbar.
City responded through Bernardo Silva in the 15th minute, but his header sailed just over the bar guarded by United goalkeeper Laminez.
The hosts thought they had opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when Amad Diallo found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Eight minutes later, Bruno Fernandes rounded City’s defense and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to score, only for VAR to intervene again and disallow the goal for offside.
United continued to push after the break. In the 57th minute, Diallo unleashed a fierce strike that was brilliantly saved by Donnarumma, who then denied Casemiro on the rebound.
The Italian goalkeeper was again at his best in the 63rd minute, producing a superb save to keep out Bryan Mbeumo’s effort.
The breakthrough finally came in the 65th minute, when Bryan Mbeumo fired United into the lead with a superb finish, following a perfectly weighted assist from Bruno Fernandes.
United doubled their advantage in the 76th minute as Patrick Dorgu found the net to put the result beyond doubt.
City were fortunate not to concede a third late on, as the post denied Diallo in the 90th minute.
Mason Mount appeared to have added a third goal in stoppage time after a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but the effort was ruled out for offside.
With the victory, Manchester United moved up to fourth place in the Premier League standings on 35 points, while Manchester City remain second with 43 points.
The match marked a memorable debut for Mike Carrick, who secured victory in his first game in charge of United, overcoming Pep Guardiola in the Manchester derby.
