A man was seriously injured after French police opened fire when he allegedly attempted to stab a security officer near the Arc de Triomphe in Paris on Friday evening.
According to Paris police, the suspect was carrying a knife and tried to attack an officer in the vicinity of the landmark.
Another officer responded by discharging his weapon in order to neutralize the threat.
Authorities confirmed that the man was transported to hospital in critical condition. No police officers or civilians were injured during the incident.
The attack took place near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, as officers were in the process of relighting the eternal flame at the historic monument.
In a statement, the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office said it had been informed of the situation and had opened an investigation into the incident.
Officials have not yet disclosed further details regarding the suspect’s identity or possible motives.
