Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen will team up with director Nikolaj Arcel once again for the historical movie "King’s Land".

Arcel also co-wrote the script for the movie with Anders Thomas which is based on the 2020 Danish bestselling book "The Captain And Ann Barbara".

The plot is set in the mid-1700s when Danish King Frederick V declared that the wild heath of Jutland should be tamed, cultivated, and colonized so that civilization could spread and new taxes be generated for the royal house.

However, no one dared to follow his decree for the heath meant certain death and was considered a place haunted by ravenous wolves, highwaymen, and brutal and unforgiving nature.

In 1755, lone solder Ludvig Kahlen decided to embark on the journey of heath in stubborn pursuit of a lifelong dream and determination to reach his goal that the path would either bring him wealth and honor or would get the better of him.

"King’s Land" is slated to begin shooting on September 5 in Denmark, Germany, and the Czech Republic.

The €8M ($8.5M) historic feature is produced by Zentropa and will be shopped internationally by TrustNordisk.

The international co-production is produced by Louise Vesth and has already sold to Germany, France, Benelux, and Hungary. Nordisk Film will distribute in the Nordics.

"King’s Land" is expected to release in Autumn 2023.

On the other hand, Mikkelsen is returning to Netflix’s Polar universe with the spy thriller movie “The Black Kaiser”.

The movie is based on Victor Santos’ Dark Horse graphic novel “Polar“.

It also sees director Jonas Åkerlund and writer Jayson Rothwell returning for the project. They collaborated with Mikkelsen in the 2019 action-comedy “Polar”.

The movie will make a new take on the original comic, not “a sequel or a prequel” to Polar.

Mikkelsen co-wrote the screenplay alongside Rothwell.

The project follows the Black Kaiser, the world’s deadliest hitman, as he uncovers a deadly conspiracy protecting a powerful syndicate of killers, unwittingly becoming their number-one target.

Robert Kulzer and Jeremy Bolt are producing through Constantin Film and JB Pictures in association with Dark Horse Entertainment.

Mikkelsen, Martin Moszkowicz, Mike Richardson, and Keith Goldberg are exec producing. XYZ Films is also exec producing the movie and handling worldwide rights. They’ll introduce the project to buyers at the Cannes film market next week.
