French President Emmanuel Macron urged Iran to halt all violations of the 2015 deal and immediately return to negotiations on reviving the accord, Elysee said Monday.

The statement was issued shortly after Macron and new President Ebrahim Raisi had their first phone conversation.

"The president called on Iran to quickly resume negotiations in Vienna to reach a conclusion and to put an end, without delay, to all nuclear activities that violate the (2015) agreement," the French presidency said.

On his part, Raisi also expressed Tehran's determination to "maintain" its capacity for "deterrence" in Gulf waters, as Iran has been accused of a recent attack on an oil tanker off Oman.

He affirmed that Iran is very serious about providing security and maintaining (its capacity) of deterrence in the Arabian Gulf region and the Arabian Sea.

Moreover, he asserted that it "will face those who deprive the region of its security."
