French President Emmanuel Macron called on Thursday, for a suspension of French investments in the United States until clarity is gained on the new "brutal and unjustified" tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump against Europe and the rest of the world.

The French president said, "Future investments, namely those announced in recent weeks, must be temporarily suspended until the situation with the United States is clarified."

Macron stated that US citizens would be "weaker and poorer" after the announcement of these tariffs, according to Agence France-Presse.

The French president also said, during a meeting with French industry representatives, that the new US tariffs are "painful and baseless" and represent a shock to international trade, noting that there must be a European response to them "sector by sector."

He added that the response to the reciprocal tariffs would be "more massive" than the previous response to the US tariffs on steel and aluminum.

The White House on Wednesday unveiled a base tariff rate of 10% on all countries, effective April 5. Higher tariffs will be imposed on countries that impose higher tariffs on the United States in the coming days, according to the administration.

"We're going to charge them about half of what they charge us," Trump said at a press conference in the White House Rose Garden on Wednesday. "So it won't be exactly reciprocal."

He added that this lower figure includes "the total rate of all their tariffs, non-monetary barriers, and other forms of fraud."
