American actor-producer Daniel Dae Kim announced Thursday he had tested positive for the coronavirus.

The 51-year-old Hawaii-based actor announced the news in a video posted on Instagram and Twitter.

"My experience fighting the coronavirus, Hi everyone- yesterday I was diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. Looks like I’ll be ok, but I wanted to share my journey with you in the hopes that you find it informative or helpful. Hope you all stay safe, calm, and above all, healthy." Kim wrote.

Kim revealed that he was recently in New York shooting a television series and returned to Hawaii after the production was shut down.

He added that he began to feel ill, quarantined himself and was later advised to get tested in Honolulu. Kim stated he was already feeling better.

"Thankfully for me it wasn't life or death," he said, urging people to follow guidelines to self isolate and wash their hands.

The actor is best known for his role as police lieutenant Chin Ho Kelly in television series "Hawaii Five-0", and for his role as Korean fisherman-turned-hitman Jin-Soo Kwon on series "Lost".

Kim is one of a handful of celebrities who have announced that they have the disease,  which included actors Tom Hanks, Idris Elba, Game of Thrones actor Kristofer Hivju, basketball star Kevin Durant and former James Bond actress Olga Kurylenko.

It is worth mentioning that, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared coronavirus a global pandemic on March 11 as the new virus has rapidly spread to more than 121,000 people from Asia to the Middle East, Europe, and the United States.

More cases of the virus, which causes respiratory disease Covid-19, continue to emerge, with outbreaks in South Korea, Italy, and Iran.

Italy recorded 368 more deaths from the coronavirus outbreak on Sunday, its biggest one day rise, amid growing concern about the ability of its strained health system to cope with the relentless increase in new cases.

Transmission of viruses between humans happens when someone comes into contact with an infected person’s secretions, such as droplets in a cough. They can also be transmitted by coming into contact with something an infected person has touched and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes.

It is known that older people appear to be more vulnerable to the effects of the emerging virus.
