The Brazillian forward Roberto Firmino doubled the scoring in the 70th minute when he fired a right-foot shot from Southampton's penalty area.
Danny Ings revived his side's hope in the game after 83 minutes, when he took advantage of a wayward pass from Liverpool's goalkeeper Adrian to Fabinho, intercepting and going on to score as he pulled a goal back for Southampton.
Southampton came close to take the shock lead after 22 minutes through Maya Yoshida, whose brilliant header was kept away by Liverpool's second-choice keeper Adrian.
Liverpool will take on Arsenal on Saturday, August 24 at Anfield in a tasty game, while Southampton will face Brighton on Saturday at 16:00 CLT.
