Liverpool further cemented their Premier League supremacy to eight points on Sunday as they defeated defending champions Manchester City 3-1 thanks to the combined efforts of Fabinho, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

A frantic start at Anfield saw the hosts take the lead when Fabinho fired a shot past stand-in goalkeeper Claudio Bravo from 26 yards out after just six minutes of play.

A VAR check allowed the goal to stand, much to the dismay of City players who were denied a penalty at the other end of the pitch seconds earlier for a handball by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

There was more suffering by the Citizens six minutes later when Andy Robertson's inch-perfect, bouncing cross met the head of Salah, who directed the ball past Bravo and into the net to double Liverpool's lead.

Mane extended the Reds advantage early in the second half by heading in at the back post from a Jordan Henderson cross.

Bernardo Silva scored Manchester City's consolation goal in the 78th minute but wasn't enough to overcome his team's downfall.

Meanwhile, City striker Sergio Aguero was substituted as his run without a goal at Anfield where he has never scored stretched to 782 minutes. The Argentinian prove his worth this season after enjoying to superb seasons last year and the year before.

The result means the European champions remain unbeaten in the league this season with 11 wins and one draw, while City drops to fourth in the table.
