The General Commander of the Libyan National Army LNA, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar is set to arrive this evening to Cairo to meet with a number of Egyptian officials to coordinate and consult on the current developments in Libya.

A high-ranking Libyan military source confirmed that the LNA Commander will arrive this evening, noting that Turkish military interference to Libya's internal affairs will be the primary subject for discussion.

The source pointed out that they will also tackle the files of combating terrorism, illegal immigration and securing the Egyptian-Libyan borders.

It added Field Marshal Haftar will consult with Egyptian officials on the resumption of the Joint Military Commission talks (5 + 5) between the Libyan warring parties, indicating that the LNA General Command is open to dialogue in full, provided that the external interference is stopped.

Egypt-UAE Welcome LNA approval to Ceasefire

Notably, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his UAE counterpart Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan welcomed on Tuesday the United Nations announcement that Libya’s warring sides agreed on resuming ceasefire talks.

In a joint statement, the Egyptian and UAE Foreign Ministries called to abide by the UN-sponsored political process and through Berlin Conference, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

They emphasized the political process is the only resolution to attain peace in Libya and maintain its security and unity.

They affirmed that they back the Libyan people and all parties seeking a truce to stop the bloodshed and achieve stability in the war-torn country.

Earlier, the UN announced that the Libyan National Army (LNA) and the Government of the National Accord (GNA) agreed to resume talks on the ceasefire and associated security arrangements based on the draft agreement submitted by UNSMIL to the parties during the Joint Military Commission talks (5 + 5).

UNSMIL wished that the resumption of the JMC talks would be marked by a return to calm and a humanitarian truce to pave the way for a lasting ceasefire agreement, enable the competent authorities to focus on addressing the repercussions and threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, and facilitate the response of local and international agencies to urgent humanitarian needs.
