The United Nations Support Mission in Libya announced today, Tuesday, the results of the Libyan National Dialogue Forum members voting for the positions of the Presidential Council after the counting process and the results ended.

The Special Representative of the Acting Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya Stephanie Williams said that none of the candidates received 70%, and therefore the list system would be entered.

Participants in the UN talks on Libya in Switzerland cast their votes on Tuesday to form a new National Presidency Council as part of efforts to form a transitional government to oversee national elections in December 2021.

Among the candidates were the Speaker of the House of Representatives in eastern Libya, Agila Saleh, and Usama Gweli, the military commander in the west.

The United Nations praised the progress. However, many Libyans remain skeptical after the collapse of previous diplomatic efforts and with key ceasefire conditions still not being met.

Some fear that losers in the process will violently reject it, that transitional leaders will refuse to cede control once they are installed, or that foreign powers will sabotage the process to defend their interests.
