Direct talks between Lebanon and Israel commenced Tuesday evening at the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C., in a move aimed at easing tensions along the southern border following a period of heightened escalation.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated that stability in southern Lebanon will remain elusive as long as Israeli forces continue to occupy Lebanese territory. He stressed that ending the occupation is a fundamental prerequisite for achieving any sustainable de-escalation in the region.
Aoun added that a viable solution lies in the redeployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces along the internationally recognized border, with the army assuming full security responsibility in the absence of any other armed presence. The proposal reflects an effort to reassert state sovereignty over all southern Lebanese territory.
