Direct talks between Lebanon and Israel have begun in Washington, marking a significant diplomatic step aimed at easing tensions along the southern Lebanese border.

The discussions, held at the U.S. Department of State, come amid intensified international efforts to contain escalation and prevent further deterioration of the security situation in the region.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said stability in southern Lebanon cannot be achieved as long as Israeli forces remain on Lebanese territory, stressing that ending what he described as occupation is essential for any lasting de-escalation.

Aoun outlined a proposal centred on the redeployment of the Lebanese Army up to internationally recognised borders, with the state assuming full security responsibility in the south without the presence of any other armed actors. The proposal reflects Beirut’s push to restore full sovereignty over its southern territories.

He expressed hope that the Washington talks would mark a genuine starting point toward ending the suffering of Lebanese citizens, particularly in the south, which has experienced repeated tensions and instability.
