Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov intends to hold bilateral talks with a number of his counterparts from the G20 member states during a meeting in Bali, Indonesia.

There will be a series of meetings,” Lavrov told the Russian news agency “TASS” today, Wednesday, during a visit to Vietnam, without specifying which countries he will hold talks with.

On Thursday, the meeting of foreign ministers of the G20 states will kick off in Bali.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has already declined to meet Lavrov. Many politicians criticized Lavrov’s participation in the meeting, against the backdrop of the ongoing Russian attack on Ukraine.

Noteworthy,  Lavrov’s participation in the meeting tomorrow aims to test the feelings of the possible participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin himself in the summit of the group scheduled in Bali later this year.

On Saturday, the head of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Osama Rabie announced that the canal recorded the highest ever daily transit rate of transiting ships, with a total of 89 ships crossing from both directions, carrying a total net tonnage of 5.2 million tons. “The number of ships transiting the canal from the north direction amounted to 44 ships with a net tonnage of three million tons, while 45 ships crossed from the south direction in the new navigational course of the canal with a total net tonnage of 2.2 million tons,” he explained. Connecting the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, the canal accounts for roughly 10 percent of global maritime trade. It is also a source of much-needed foreign currency for Egypt, which is battling crippling inflation and a currency devaluation triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The SCA has hiked passage tolls for transiting vessels, including fuel tankers, twice this year. In April, the waterway recorded its highest-ever monthly revenue of $629 million, despite the rise in oil prices due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. As Egypt reels under mounting economic pressures from the war, foreign currency reserves fell $5.5 billion between March and May to stand at $35.5 billion. Earlier this year, the SCA reported the canal’s highest annual revenue for a calendar year, netting $6.3 billion dollars in 2021, despite the coronavirus pandemic and a six-day blockage by the giant cargo ship the Ever Given.
