LaLiga has announced a unique initiative called “LaLiga Retro Matchday,” which will take place from April 10 to April 13, 2026, during matchday 31 of the Spanish top division and matchday 35 of the second division.
The event will see clubs celebrate their history by wearing special retro-inspired kits.
For the first time in European professional football, all 38 clubs from LaLiga and LaLiga Hypermotion will participate in the initiative.
Each team will wear a redesigned kit inspired by iconic designs and memorable moments from its history, turning the round into a celebration of the league’s rich football heritage.
Referees will also take part in the event by wearing special retro-style uniforms designed by the Technical Committee of Referees of the Royal Spanish Football Federation.
The goal of the initiative is to transform club history into a “living legacy” that fans can experience directly on the pitch.
The retro kits will serve as a bridge between generations, connecting the traditions of long-time supporters with the modern era of football.
LaLiga says the initiative combines football and fashion in a unique way, making it the only coordinated event of this kind among Europe’s top five leagues.
The official designs of the kits will be revealed on March 19 during Madrid Fashion Week, highlighting the connection between football culture and the fashion industry.
LaLiga believes presenting the collection at a major fashion event will help showcase the creative identity of Spanish clubs beyond the stadium.
According to Jaime Blanco, Director of the Clubs Office at LaLiga, the Retro Matchday offers a unique opportunity to honor the history of clubs and the legends who shaped generations of fans while bringing the past into the present.
The celebration will also include a broader fan experience, featuring vintage-style broadcast graphics, digital content, and special activities before and after the matches. The initiative will involve clubs, former players, sponsors, and key figures across the LaLiga ecosystem.
