Kuwait has inaugurated its first local factory for producing optical fiber cables, marking a significant milestone in the country’s telecommunications industry.
The factory, established by Taihan Kuwait, is located in the Mina Abdullah Industrial Zone and is set to manufacture fiber optic cables, which are essential for modern communication systems and data transmission across telecommunications and internet networks.
The launch, which took place on Monday, was praised by Ziad Al-Najem, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
He highlighted the strategic importance of this type of factory as the country transitions from copper to fiber optic cables.
Fiber optics offer enhanced communication capabilities and faster, more secure data transmission, making them a key component in Kuwait’s telecommunications infrastructure upgrade.
Atallah Al-Mutairi, Chairman of Taihan Kuwait, provided details about the factory’s scale, noting that it covers an area of 5,000 square meters and has an initial production capacity of nearly 500,000 kilometers of fiber annually.
The project represents an investment of between $15 million and $20 million.
Fiber optic cables, made from pure glass and as thin as a human hair, utilize light technology to transmit large volumes of data at high speeds, with less signal loss compared to traditional copper cables. This makes them the preferred choice for high-performance communication networks.
Taihan Kuwait, a joint venture formed in January 2021, brings together South Korean company Taihan Cable & Solution and Kuwaiti firm Rank General Trading and Contracting.
