The Kremlin stated, on Thursday, it was bewildered by the U.S. decision to impose sanctions against President Vladimir Putin's adult daughters.

The U.S. announced new sanctions against Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine, targeting Russian banks and elites, including Putin's daughters Katerina and Maria.

"Of course we consider these sanctions in themselves to be the extension of an absolutely rabid position on the imposition of restrictions," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. "In any case, the ongoing line on imposing restrictions against family members speaks for itself."

Peskov said the Kremlin could not comprehend why Putin's daughters would be targeted.

"This is something that is difficult to understand and explain," he said. "Unfortunately, we have to deal with such opponents."

Social media users called Putin’s daughters, Maria Vorontsova and Katerina Tikhonova, “war criminals” amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

Katerina, aka Yekaterina Vladimirovna Putina, is the second daughter of Putin. Katerina is a  scientist, manager, and former acrobatic dancer.

On the other hand, Putin’s eldest daughter, Maria, is a leading researcher at the National Medical Research Center for Endocrinology of the Ministry of Health of Russia and an expert in rare genetic diseases in children.
