Fresh out of the great victory against Anthony Yarde, Sergey Kovalev is optimistic a deal can be agreed to fight Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in November.
The Russian light-heavyweight, the reigning WBO champion, is number one contender to become the next opponent for highest paid athlete in the world Mexican star 'Canelo', who is targeting a world title in a fourth weight pision.
When asked if there was optimism over an agreement, Kathy Duva, CEO of Main Events who promotes Kovalev, told Sky Sports: "Yes, possibly."
A win over Alvarez would be the biggest of Kovalev’s career, because it would be the biggest fight of Kovaelv’s career. Kovalev's last major fight was against Andre Ward, who he fought twice but lost both times.
Coming back so quickly could be tough on the aging Russian, or it could work to his advantage. Trainer Buddy McGirt tells ESPN that he’s fine with the idea, as Kovalev won’t have so much work to do simply getting into ring shape.
Canelo on the other hands was last seen in his unanimous decision victory over Daniel Jacobs last May and hasn't fought since then. He is currently on an 11 year fight deal with streaming service DAZN for 365 million dollars, becoming he highest paid athlete in the process.
A fight would Kovalev could prove to be very risky for the young Mexican as the Russian is know for his punching power and good stamina in the ring. Plus the size difference between the two could prove to be a huge disadvantage for Canelo.
