On Thursday, Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani asked the US administration to assist her country to join NATO, Reuters reported.

Osmani’s request came in her letter to US President Joe Biden on March 10. She justified her request that her country’s membership in Nato become “imperative” and stated, ”I’m fully aware of the Russian military operations in Ukraine.”

She said: “We express our faith and expectation that the U.S. will use its leadership and influence to actively support and advance the complex process of NATO membership for Kosovo.”

As the US has been the small state’s main international supporter since 2008, Osmani wrote in her letter: “We are exposed to persistent efforts by Russia to undermine Kosovo and destabilise the entire Western Balkans.”

On the other hand, a Nato official told Reuters: “All decisions by NATO – including those related to membership – are taken by the North Atlantic Council (NATO’s only decision-making body).”
