Ronald Koeman has resigned as head coach of the Netherlands following the Oranje's dramatic elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the hands of Morocco.

The Dutch were knocked out in the Round of 32 after a 1-1 draw ended in a 3-2 penalty shootout defeat at Estadio Monterrey.

Cody Gakpo gave the Netherlands the lead in the 72nd minute before Issa Diop headed home a dramatic late equalizer to force extra time. Morocco ultimately prevailed on penalties, with Crysencio Summerville's missed spot-kick proving decisive.

The defeat marked the third consecutive World Cup in which the Netherlands have been eliminated in a penalty shootout.

In a heartfelt statement, Koeman confirmed his decision to step down.

"Last night I decided to end my time as head coach of the Dutch national team," Koeman said. "Looking back on my career, I feel especially proud and grateful. I have had the privilege of working with great clubs and twice managing the Oranje. It hurts that my journey with the national team ends this way."

"We all dreamed of writing history at this World Cup. That didn't happen, and no one is more disappointed than I am. As head coach, I take full responsibility."

The 63-year-old also revealed that recent personal circumstances had influenced his decision, referencing his wife Bartina's battle with breast cancer.

"The past few years have reminded me that there are more important things than football. Football has been my life, but health is priceless. When someone you love is fighting a difficult battle, your perspective changes."

Koeman expressed gratitude to his players, coaching staff, the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB), club officials and supporters for their trust and support throughout his tenure.

"I would have loved to finish my time with the Oranje by winning the World Cup, but that dream remained unfulfilled. Above all, however, I leave with pride for everything football has given me."

Koeman managed the Netherlands across two separate spells, interrupted by his time as Barcelona head coach. During his tenure, he guided the Oranje to the 2019 UEFA Nations League final and the semifinals of UEFA Euro 2024 before bringing his second spell in charge to an end following the disappointing World Cup exit.
