The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has announced the winners of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
They are Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar M. Yaghi in recognition of their groundbreaking work in developing Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs), a class of innovative materials that has revolutionized chemistry, materials science, and energy research.
According to the Nobel Committee, the trio’s pioneering research laid the foundation for understanding and designing porous crystalline materials with remarkable structural flexibility.
These Metal–Organic Frameworks can efficiently store and separate gases, and catalyze chemical reactions, opening new frontiers in sustainable technologies.
Today, MOFs are used in carbon capture, water purification, and hydrogen storage, making them one of the most impactful scientific advances toward building a more sustainable future.
The Nobel Committee described the discovery as “a milestone in molecular architecture,” emphasizing its potential to reshape industrial chemistry and environmental innovation.
