A truck crashed into pedestrians and motorbikes near Kenya's western border with Tanzania, killing at least 10 people and injuring 10 others, authorities said.

A local police commander said the accident, which took place in the town of Migori, occurred along a major highway when the driver lost control of the brakes.

Migori county commander Mark Wanjala said an operation to free people trapped under the truck was underway, and there were fears the deal toll might rise, Migori county commander Mark Wanjala said.

Wanjala pointed out that two other people were knocked over a bridge and into a river, Wangalla said, but an attempt to rescue them did not begin.

Eyewitnesses told local media that the truck driver honked the car horn repeatedly before the collision. The truck was carrying sacks of rice towards the border town of Spain into neighboring Tanzania.

Videos of people looting rice while people remained trapped under the track appeared on social media.

Many Kenyans travel to their rural homes over the Easter holidays, and road accidents are common during the busy season.

Police urged motorists to be careful and ensure vehicles are well-maintained before embarking on long journeys.
