South African Kaizer Chiefs star Luke Fleurs was shot dead in a car hijacking, Kaizer Chiefs announced on Thursday.
The shooting took place at a petrol station on Wednesday in Florida, Johannesburg, South Africa.
The 24-year-old was waiting before he was approached by an armed man, who ordered him to get out of the vehicle.
One of the suspects left the scene with Fleurs' car after the shooting.
Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo told local media: "The suspects pointed [at] him with a firearm and took him out of his vehicle, then shot him once on the upper body."
In the same context, Kaizer Chiefs said that the death was "tragic".
“We are profoundly shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic and untimely passing of one of our players, Luke Fleurs,” Kaizer Chiefs said in a statement.
