Jose Mourinho is set to return to Real Madrid as head coach on a two-year contract, marking the Portuguese manager’s second spell at the Santiago Bernabéu.

According to reports from Sky News, Mourinho’s deal will run until the summer of 2028, with an option to extend for an additional season. An official announcement is expected following Real Madrid’s final La Liga match of the campaign against Athletic Bilbao.

Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning the La Liga title in 2012 and establishing one of the most competitive eras in Spanish football through his rivalry with Pep Guardiola and FC Barcelona.

The move comes after the departure of Xabi Alonso, whose stint at Real Madrid ended earlier this year after only seven months in charge. Alonso was officially appointed manager of Chelsea FC on Sunday.

Club president Florentino Perez has remained a long-time admirer of Mourinho, with both maintaining a close relationship since the coach’s first tenure in Madrid.

Mourinho currently manages SL Benfica and had recently dismissed speculation surrounding his future as the Portuguese side battled for Champions League qualification.

His return arrives during a difficult period for Real Madrid after losing the domestic title race to Barcelona and suffering a quarter-final exit in the UEFA Champions League. Off-field tensions have also affected the squad in recent weeks, increasing pressure on the club ahead of a major rebuild this summer.
