Portuguese coach José Mourinho, head coach of Benfica, was briefly admitted to hospital just days before his side’s crucial showdown against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.
Benfica are set to host the Spanish giants on Tuesday in Lisbon in the first leg of the playoff round for a place in the Round of 16.
According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Mourinho was taken on Friday morning to the “Divine Holy Spirit” Hospital in Ponta Delgada, hours before Benfica’s 2–1 league victory over Santa Clara.
The report stated that Mourinho woke up suffering from an ear infection that caused significant discomfort, prompting him to seek medical attention. He remained at the hospital for less than an hour, receiving treatment and medication before returning to the team hotel.
The former Real Madrid manager (2010–2013) is expected to be fit to lead Benfica against the 14-time European champions on Tuesday.
Notably, Mourinho previously guided Benfica to an impressive 4–2 win over Real Madrid in the final round of the league phase, a result that forced the Spanish side into the playoff round rather than direct qualification for the Round of 16.
