Former Manchester City defender John Stones is in talks over a move to Inter Milan after leaving the Premier League club as a free agent, according to ESPN.

The 32-year-old became available this summer after City opted not to renew his contract following two injury-hit seasons that limited him to just 20 Premier League appearances between 2024 and 2026.

Although Stones attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, Inter Milan have emerged as the frontrunners to sign the England international.

Despite making only 18 appearances for City during the 2025-26 campaign, Stones returned to full fitness in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he started England's matches against Croatia, Norway and Argentina, playing a key role in the national team's tournament run.

Meanwhile, Manchester City are reportedly considering further defensive reinforcements before the summer transfer window closes.

The club have been encouraged by Matheus Nunes' performances in a right-back role but are still evaluating the possibility of signing another specialist full-back.

City had previously shown interest in Pedro Porro, but the Spain international recently committed his future to Tottenham Hotspur by signing a new long-term contract.

The Premier League champions have also secured the futures of defenders Josko Gvardiol and Abdukodir Khusanov, with both players signing new long-term deals. Gvardiol had been linked with moves to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich before extending his stay at the Etihad Stadium.
