American Hip-hop icon Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez announced Thursday that they have officially called it quits, after a two-year engagement and four years of dating.

"We have realized we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so. We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects," they revealed in a joint statement.

"We wish the best for each other and one another's children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support." they concluded.

Lopez has 13-year-old twins, Emme and Max, and Rodriguez has two daughters, Natasha, 16, and Ella, 12.

Hours before the announcement, Rodriguez shared a video on Instagram Stories of a framed photo of himself and Lopez, tagging his former fiancée in the post.

Prior to their split, multiple sources revealed on March 12 that the two had called off their engagement.

A source noted that the pair decided their relationship had run its course, however, a day later, a source stated that the two were continuing their relationship and working through things and denied that there was a third party involved.

Lopez mocked the split headlines in a TikTok set to rapper Saweetie's song, "Pretty B***h Freestyle", while Rodriguez declared he was "not single" in a video. He also tagged Lopez in an Instagram post, writing, "New week. New day. Onward, upward."

Amid the rumors, the former couple visited the Dominican Republic last month with their children and shared photos on social media from the trip.

However, Lopez shared several new photos on Instagram this week, without her engagement ring, adding further fuel to the split speculation.

Lopez and Rodriguez got engaged in March 2019.

Earlier this year, Lopez opened up about having to postpone their wedding twice because of the ongoing coronavirus. She also shared last month that the two had gone to therapy together.

In 2018, the pop star stated that her relationship with Rodriguez was different from her previous ones.
