Japan has announced a grant of 793 million Japanese yen (over $5 million) to support the second phase of the Aden Port Efficiency Improvement Project, through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Yemen.
The Japanese Embassy in Yemen stated that Acting Ambassador Kazuhiro Higashi exchanged memorandums of understanding with UNDP Resident Representative Zina Mohamed on Monday to formalize this support.
The grant aims to bolster logistical efficiency at Aden Port by establishing a streamlined management system, enhancing maintenance capabilities, and facilitating the entry of humanitarian aid and commercial goods.
The project includes refurbishing maritime workshops, providing mobile maintenance facilities, and stationing a vessel at the port. These initiatives are expected to contribute significantly to the reconstruction efforts in Yemen.
This new funding builds upon Japan's previous support for Aden Port in 2022, which was part of the "Aden Port Efficiency Improvement Project" aimed at aiding the Yemeni government's efforts to enhance the functionality of Aden as the temporary capital city.
The Japanese government reiterated its commitment to actively working with the UN and other concerned nations to achieve peace and stability in Yemen.
