The Japan Foundation in Cairo has inaugurated its travelling exhibition, “NINGYO: The Art and Beauty of Japanese Dolls,” at the Gezira Art Center, offering Egyptian audiences a rare look into one of Japan’s most distinctive artistic traditions.

The exhibition opened on Wednesday, April 8, in the presence of Ayumi Hashimoto, Director of the Japan Foundation Cairo; Fumio Iwai, Ambassador of Japan to Egypt; Prof. Dr. Ali Said, Director of Art Centers at Egypt’s Fine Arts Sector; and Amir El-Leithy.

Developed as a successor to the acclaimed “Dolls of Japan” exhibition, the showcase explores the history and cultural significance of Japanese dolls through 67 carefully selected pieces displayed across four thematic sections: dolls associated with prayers for children’s growth, dolls as fine art, dolls as folk art, and the spread of Ningyo culture.

The exhibition presents a broad survey of Japanese doll-making traditions, from ancient forms such as Katashiro and Amagatsu—considered the archetypes of Japanese dolls—to regional folk dolls, modern dress-up dolls and contemporary collectible figures. Organisers say the exhibition aims to highlight the exceptional craftsmanship and cultural depth that distinguish Japanese doll-making.

The Cairo leg of the exhibition runs from April 9 to April 29, 2026, at the Gezira Art Center, open daily from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, except Fridays, Sundays and public holidays. The exhibition will later move to the Museum of Fine Arts in Alexandria from May 7 to May 24.

Special accompanying events will feature Japanese doll artist Hiromine Nakamura, the fourth-generation heir of the Nakamura Ningyo lineage, including a lecture titled “Japanese Dolls – Embodiments of Human Prayers” on April 15 and a Kabuki Doll Coloring Workshop on April 16 at the Japan Foundation Cairo.

Founded as Japan’s primary institution for international cultural exchange, the Japan Foundation’s Cairo office—established in 1995—is its only branch in the Middle East and Africa.
