The Japan national football team ended the unbeaten run of Thomas Tuchel with the England national football team after securing a 1-0 victory in an international friendly on Tuesday.
The result marked Tuchel’s first defeat since taking charge in June 2025, when England previously lost by the same scoreline to Senegal national football team.
Since then, England had recorded six consecutive wins and one draw against Uruguay national football team.
Japan’s win was also historic, as they became the first Asian side to defeat England in either a friendly or competitive match, underlining a significant milestone for both the team and Asian football.
England were notably weakened by the absence of several key players, with eight members of the squad ruled out due to injuries and medical assessments.
Those missing included Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, Adam Wharton, Aaron Ramsdale, John Stones, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Fikayo Tomori.
Despite the absences, the defeat represents a setback for England as they continue preparations for upcoming international competitions, while Japan will take confidence from a landmark result against one of Europe’s top sides.
