Japan is preparing to deploy the first batch of its domestically developed long-range missiles as the country accelerates efforts to strengthen its military capabilities amid rising regional tensions.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said the upgraded Type-12 land-to-ship missiles will be deployed at Camp Kengun in Kumamoto Prefecture in southwestern Japan by the end of March.

The deployment will mark the completion of the initial rollout of the new missile system, which is designed to extend Japan’s strike capabilities in response to growing security challenges in the region.

Military vehicles carrying launch platforms and other equipment reportedly arrived at the base after midnight in what officials described as a highly discreet operation.

Dozens of protesters gathered outside the camp, chanting slogans opposing the deployment and holding signs calling on the government to halt the introduction of long-range missiles.

Opponents criticized the lack of transparency surrounding the operation, warning that the deployment could increase regional tensions and make the missile sites potential targets in future conflicts.
