Japan deployed troops on Wednesday to help contain a surge in bear attacks that have terrorized residents in a mountainous region of northern Akita.
The Associated Press reported daily encounters with brown and Asiatic black bears, which are searching for food ahead of hibernation. The bears have been spotted near schools, train stations, shops, and hot spring resorts.
Since April, more than 100 people have been injured and at least 12 killed in bear attacks across Japan, according to Ministry of the Environment statistics as of the end of October.
