Heavy snowfall in northern Japan has killed 13 people, injured more than 80, and leftover 10,000 homes without electricity.

The Meteorological Agency warned that blizzards and high waves in northern Japan and along the Sea of Japan coast could cause up to 60 centimetres of snow.

By late Saturday afternoon, more than 30 people had been seriously injured and more than 50 had minor injuries, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.

The Japanese Radio and Television Corporation (NHK) reported that train and plane services were disrupted in northern the country, and some parts of the central and western regions experienced traffic disruptions.
