On Wednesday, the Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi announced that he would pay a visit to Libya on 6 or 7 April, stressing that Italy fully supports the interim Government of National Unity (GNU) which is tasked with paving the way for holding national elections on December 24.

Draghi, in a speech before the Italian Senate, said that his country is defending its national interests in Libya and the Mediterranean region, stressing his keenness to maintain Italy's international cooperation with its strategic partners.

The Italian Prime Minister's visit is expected to focus on reviving a friendship treaty between Italy and Libya that was suspended during last year's conflict, which saw Gaddafi ousted and killed.
