Italy made a strong statement under new head coach Gennaro Gattuso, sweeping aside Estonia 5-0 in their 2026 World Cup qualifying clash on Friday night.
After a goalless first half, the Azzurri came alive in the second period. Moise Kean broke the deadlock in the 58th minute, before Mateo Retegui doubled the lead in the 69th.
Giacomo Raspadori added a third just two minutes later, with Retegui striking again in the 89th. Alessandro Bastoni capped off the rout with a stoppage-time goal in the 92nd minute.
The emphatic win lifts Italy to third place in the group with six points, while Estonia sit just behind them in fourth with three points.
Despite the convincing result, Italy remain under pressure after a poor start to the campaign in June, a run that cost Luciano Spalletti his job.
Gattuso’s men will need to build on this momentum to avoid the risk of missing out on the World Cup, which will be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico in 2026.
