Italian football has been thrown into crisis following the resignation of federation president Gabriele Gravina, amid widespread backlash after the national team’s shocking failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Azzurri’s hopes were dashed after a dramatic defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties in the European qualification playoffs, marking Italy’s third consecutive absence from the world’s biggest football tournament following missed appearances in 2018 and 2022.

According to reports from Tuttosport, the Italian Football Federation is now considering three legendary figures to take over leadership during one of the most challenging periods in its history.

The shortlist includes Alessandro Del Piero, a revered icon of Juventus and the national team, widely respected for his leadership and global profile.

Also under consideration is Paolo Maldini, one of the greatest defenders in football history and a symbol of Italian resilience.

Completing the trio is Demetrio Albertini, a distinguished former midfielder known for his tactical intelligence and deep understanding of the game.

Gravina formally stepped down from his role, triggering an electoral process that will culminate in a vote scheduled for June 22.

Candidates must officially confirm their nominations at least 40 days prior to the election date.

The federation now faces mounting pressure to restore credibility and rebuild the national team’s competitive standing, with the appointment of a new president seen as a crucial step toward reversing Italy’s recent decline on the international stage.
